Machame Route

5 Nights on the Mountain and 2 Nights in Moshi (Arrival and Departure nights)

Overview:

This non-technical Kilimanjaro route and one more popular. Commonly referred to as the ‘whisky’ route due to its strong nature of the route, Machame starts at the southwest mountain rain forest and involves steep and challenging hikes on the southern circuit which is well designed for acclimatization with natural features taking you high and low.

Itinerary

DAY 1 – YOUR ARRIVAL

Upon Arrival go through Customs and meet your Diver guide at the Arrivals. You will then be transfers to your accommodation in Moshi Town. Your Mountain guide will meet you today afternoon and whereby you will get a briefing for your adventure and he will check your Mountain kit to check that you have all you require for the Climb.

DAY 2 – MACHAME CAMP

Start Climb At – 1800m And End Climb At 2835m For Today.
You Will Cover A Distance Of 11km / Time – 5-7 Hours
Climate Zone – Afromontane Forest

After breakfast you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro National Park, after needful paperwork and final packing you will start your climb from Machame Gate. The climb is through verdant afromontane forest and is steep in certain areas. A picnic lunch will be served. Dinner and overnight at Machame Camp for the night.

DAY 3 – SHIRA

Start Climb At – 2835m And End At 3750m

You Will Cover A Distance Of 5km / Time – 4-6 Hrs
Climate Zones – Afromontane Forest / Heath

After Breakfast you will climb to Shira Camp. The first part of the climb is quite steep as altitude is gained rapidly. The area you pass is known as the heath zone where attractive heliochrysum and lobelia plants can be found. Various geologic features can be seen today from lava tubes to glacial valleys.

DAY 4 – BARRANCO CAMP

Start Climb At –3750m And End At 3900m
You Will Cover A Distance Of 10km / Time – 6-8 Hrs
Climate Zone – Alpine Desert

After breakfast, You ascend into alpine desert to Lava Tower (Alt is 4600m) where lunch will be served. Then descending to Barranco Camp for Dinner and overnight

DAY 5 – BARAFU CAMP

Start Climb At 3900m And End At 4673m

You Will Cover A Distance 8km / Time – 9 Hours
Climate Zone – Alpine Desert

After Breakfast you will ascend the Barranco Wall and hike glacial valleys to Karanga Camp. Then ascending to Barafu Camp. After dinner rest for a few hours prior to your final Summit.

DAY 6 – KILIMANJARO SUMMIT / MWEKA CAMP

Start Climb At 4673m And End At 3100m
You Will Cover A Distance Of 18km / Time 14 -16 Hrs
Climate Zones – Alpine Desert, Arctic, Heath

You will depart just before midnight for the final summit of Uhuru Peak which stands tall at 5895m reaching the summit by dawn as the first rays of light start to appear.

You then start your descend and hike downhill to Mweka Camp for Dinner and overnight.

DAY 7 – MOSHI

Start Climb At 3100m And End At 1640m
You Will Cover A Distance Of 10km / Time 3-4 Hrs
Climate Zone – Afromontane Forest

After breakfast you descend once again through afromontane forest and around midday. You will then be transferred back to your lodge for Overnight.

DAY 8 – DEPARTURE.

Breakfast, day at Leisure. You will be transferred to the airport for your flight departure home.
